Miss 2018 Newsletter

Hello Southwest Michigan Family!

My name is Amber Michelle Case and I am incredibly excited to be representing all the amazing communities as Miss Southwest Michigan 2018. Let me introduce myself. I am 19 years old and currently a sophomore at Lake Michigan College. I am pursuing a career in Choral Conducting with a focus in junior high and high school choirs.

One of my biggest passions is music. I have been in choir since the third grade, but started taking it very seriously in my senior year. Some of the events I was able to participate in while in choir were district solo and ensemble, Southwestern Michigan Vocal Festival, Southwestern Michigan Vocal Festival Honors Choir, jazz festivals, and our junior high musicals. It was something that I enjoyed so much. Music and choir have helped me a great deal throughout my life, and it was a pleasure to be asked back to help make an impact on students’ lives as the choir manager.

Being chosen as Miss Southwest Michigan gives me an incredible opportunity. I’ve done three pageants with the community of Coloma, but this program is so different. It’s an amazing program that represents respect, encouragement, honor, and love. I’ve always done pageants for the experience, knowledge, and the memories. There have been so many amazing ladies that have filled this role, so I know I have some big shoes to fill.

My platform for the year is Suicide Prevention/Awareness: Making an Impact. I plan to use my platform to lift others up and let people know that they’re not alone. There are many reasons why people fall into depression and have suicidal thoughts. Some people don’t have a strong support system and feel they can’t talk about how they’re feeling because people won’t understand. I want people to know that there is help and that there are people who care about and love them.

This topic is widely avoided because usually people don’t know what to say. Some symptoms are behavioral change and social interaction. For me, I started to become angry and irritable. I used to love hanging out with my friends in my free time and then all of a sudden I just locked myself in my room all the time. When you’re not sure what to say, try saying ‘Everything will be okay’ or ‘Is there anything I can do to help?’

I know this year is going to be a whirlwind, but I am so excited for the outcome. I’m so thrilled to have the opportunity to go out into the communities and meet so many neighbors in Michigan’s great Southwest. I am also looking forward to making an impact on people’s lives by sharing my personal testimony and speaking about my platform. Throughout my year of service my goals are to spread love, happiness, and use my testimony to encourage people. Thank you so much to everyone who volunteers for the Southwest Michigan Scholarship Program. This is an amazing opportunity for me and I couldn’t be here without you.

Love,
Amber Michelle Case
